Teeth Cleaning

It is called Scaling and Polishing. It involves cleaning of both the visible part above the gums and just under the gums where your toothbrush is unable to reach.

Scale & Polish -Why?

Regular scaling and polishing is an essential part of preventive dental care. At Dental Booth by Bangalore Dental and General Polyclinic, we recommend professional cleaning to keep your teeth, gums, and overall oral health in top shape.

Prevent Tooth Decay

Plaque is a sticky, naturally occurring film that builds up on your teeth. If not removed, it hardens into calculus (tartar). Bacteria thrive in these deposits, and when combined with leftover food particles, they increase the risk of tooth decayand cavities.

Prevent or Manage Gum Disease

Plaque and tartar can irritate the gums, leading to gingivitis (gum inflammation). If left untreated, this may progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that causes the loss of bone and tissue supporting your teeth. Over time, this can lead to loose teeth, tooth mobility, and even tooth loss.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip It:

  • Scaling removes tartar buildup that brushing alone can’t eliminate

  •  Polishing smoothens the tooth surface and removes stains

  • Helps detect early signs of gum problems and oral hygiene issues

  • Supports a brighter smile and fresher breath

How Is Scaling and Polishing Done?

At Dental Booth by Bangalore Dental and General Polyclinic, our scaling and polishing procedure is designed to safely and effectively remove plaque, tartar, and stains that cannot be removed by regular brushing.

Step-by-Step Process:

✅ Scaling:

Our dentist uses a combination of ultrasonic (motorized) scalers and hand instruments to gently remove calculus (tartar) and plaque deposits from the teeth — especially around the gumline and in between teeth.

✅ Polishing:

Once the teeth are clean, we use a high-speed polishing handpiece fitted with a rubber cup or brush along with special prophy pastes to polish the tooth surfaces — leaving them smooth, shiny, and stain-free.

💦 Water spray is used throughout the process to cool the instruments and wash away debris. A suction device is used to keep your mouth comfortable and free of water during the treatment.

⚠️ Is Scaling Painful?

Scaling is usually comfortable, but some patients may experience mild sensitivity — especially if the gums have receded or the roots of the teeth are exposed due to prolonged gum disease. This sensitivity is temporary and can be managed with desensitizing toothpaste and proper oral care.

Myths About Teeth Scaling – Debunked!

At Dental Booth by Bangalore Dental and General Polyclinic, many patients express concerns or misconceptions about scaling and polishing. Let’s clear up some of the most common myths and set the record straight.

❌ Myth 1: Scaling Makes Teeth Loose

✅ Truth: Scaling does not loosen your teeth. In fact, it helps prevent tooth loss.

What actually happens: When tartar (calculus) builds up around the gums, it damages the supporting bone and tissue. Once this hardened plaque is removed during scaling, teeth may feel looser temporarily — but that’s only because the hidden deposits have been cleared. The teeth were already weakened by gum disease, not the cleaning process.

❌ Myth 2: Scaling Causes Tooth Sensitivity

✅ Truth: Some sensitivity after scaling is normal and temporary.

When tartar is removed, areas of the tooth that were previously covered may become exposed to the oral environment, causing mild sensitivity to hot or cold. This usually subsides within a few days and can be managed with desensitizing toothpaste and proper oral hygiene.

❌ Myth 3: Scaling Increases Gaps Between Teeth

✅ Truth: Scaling only reveals the natural spacing that was hidden by tartar buildup.

Tartar can fill the spaces between your teeth over time, making them appear tighter than they are. Once this buildup is removed during scaling, patients may notice gaps that were always present but masked by the deposits. This is a sign of healthy cleaning, not damage.
