There are many reasons why regular dental check ups are important. It is a critical part of preventive dental care. Everything needs maintenance whether it’s your home, your car, your health or your teeth. Regular maintenance of any product can help you identify potential problems before they become real ones. It is essential for long lasting optimal function of any product. Same goes for the teeth as well. If you want your teeth to serve you longer, regular dental check-ups are a must.
Also, the main challenge with your tooth structure is that for the most part, the damage is not reversible, meaning permanent damage and irreversible changes. Hence, the sooner you identify the problem, easier it is to repair and also cheaper: Think root canal (Rs 3000-7000 ish) and a crown (Rs 3000 - 20,000 ish), or extraction and an implant (Rs 30,000 ish), versus a simple filling (Rs 1000-2000 ish).
Couple this with the fact that your tooth/ teeth are never going to be as good as those that nature gave you – you need to take a little responsibility here… make sure, if at all possible, it doesn’t get to this point.
Your teeth and mouth are so important: you use it to smile, chew, kiss, eat, breath, speak etc. Literally, there isn’t an area that is more important to your social life – so get in good habits early – have regular check ups and cleans; make your teeth and mouth something you don’t have worry about. Detection of problems in their early stages… dental caries, gum disease, oral cancer or bruxism (grinding)… makes for much easier treatment, so please be pro-active in your healthcare, otherwise your future is one without your own teeth!

WHAT TO EXPECT ?
During a dental exam, the dentist will:
Evaluate your overall health and oral hygiene
Evaluate your risk of tooth decay, root decay, and gum or bone disease
Evaluate your need for tooth restoration or replacement
Check your bite and jaw for problems
Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for your teeth or dentures
Possibly take dental X-rays or, if necessary.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED A DENTAL CHECK-UP ?
The dentist will use the information gathered about your oral health to determine a personalised schedule for regular maintenance, cleaning, and check-ups. Simply put, the frequency of your visits to the dentist will depend on how healthy your gums and teeth are and the potential risk for future problems.
For those adults who aren’t smokers, have very good hygiene, low risk of decay, eat very little sugar, relatively low alcohol intake and have few or no past dental problems, then seeing the dentist once a year may suffice.
Children should definitely been seen every 6 months, as so many changes are taking place including the teeth and the diet – plus they need to establish a trusting relationship with Dentist, just in case treatment is needed. The importance of getting into good habits early simply cannot be over stressed.
For patients with certain oral risks, and those with high-risk factors for periodontal disease, dentists will often recommend more frequent visits to address these specific issues. Generally, for people with a healthy mouth, dentists recommend their patients to visit them every six months.
